Campaign Continuance

Hi all, two things.

First, my linux server is having some issues. I plan on rebuilding it as soon as school is over for this semester (May 14th), so if, perchance, you've tried to visit our campaign site, or its sister Fantasy Fellowship site, they're currently unavailable.

Second, with Mike Richter leaving us (sad!!) near the end of summer, we're going to have to figure out what to do with respect to the campaign. I've spoken to Jon a little bit about it, and there seem to be a few possibilities. First, I don't think it's fair for Richter and I to fight our huge bridge battle, as that will have major consequences for either or both of our armies, and so there is little incentive for me to fight this battle, as if we continue the campaign after he moves, we'll likely divide up his AWs and dissolve his armies.

That leads me to what we want to do A.R. (Anno Richter). I see a couple options:
  1. We dissolve his armies and divide his AWs among us, evenly. And we continue the campaign from where it stands, unchanged. This will involve negotiation to figure out who gets what. And we could discuss have a one-time resource bonus to allow us to buy troops for our new regions.
  2. We end this campaign and plan a restart. We should reach agreement on any potential rule changes we'd like to implement. We also need to decide whether anyone wants to switch teams, and determine whether we either search for a 4th, or divide up the 4th team's units among us.
  3. If anyone does not want to continue the campaign at all, then the remaining people need to figure out what to do, based on the above options.

Finally, Ryan is coming into Chicago for a few weeks beginning around the last week of May. We wanted to setup the following:
  1. A few Warhammer 40K games with as many of us as are interested, to give Richter a huge sendoff! It sounds like Richter's table is being taken down, so he cannot host. I have a 4x6 table and plenty of terrain, so I am happy to host as many of these as we can fit in while Ryan's here. And a few more after Ryan leaves, right up until the day prior to the plane flight (assuming Richter isn't swimming to Puerto Rico).
  2. A huge blowout Lord of the Rings game. Jon suggested we could meet at C3. We'll setup the two long conference tables (8x3 each, I believe) for a massive battlefield, and throw out as many thousands of points as we have. All four of us are invited, of course. We could play this as our factions (though we should team up to have two teams), though I think I'd rather just decide on teams and available factions per team, then make up a huge army and duke it out. I truly think it would be sweet to have all 9 of my Ringwraiths on the board at once. :) I imagine we need a saturday to do this ... and we'll probably need an entire saturday, including ordering in lunch. So Jon, finish your sermon prep early that week (or get a Sunday substitute -- generalship is hard work! :) ).
Going back to the Campaign for a second, if we decide to start fresh, I've got a neat idea to facilitate collaboration (coming up with, and discussing, rule change ideas), as well as project management (tracking when changes are implemented, either in my campaign code or just in the rule set).

So chime in everyone. What are your thoughts on both issues discussed above?

No suggestions from anyone? No opinions? Really? I thought we had an opinionated bunch! :)

Ok, I'll chime in first with my thoughts.

Assuming everyone is interested in continuing playing some sort of campaign, I suggest we end the current campaign. As part of that, I would like to setup an anonymous poll, either online or via a trusted 3rd party, in which we are each to vote on the winner of the current campaign. Guidelines about voting and the specific mechanisms for doing so will be determined if everyone supports this.

Second, I propose that we set an October start date for Campaign version 3, and spend the interim months discussing, and implementing, changes in rules, software, etc. We'll have to figure out how to handle 3 players, and/or see if we can find a 4th.

Those are my thoughts.

We do need to start a version three. October is a fine time to start. I will try and recruit a couple of others to join us before then. I definitely still want to play Gondor because of my investment in models, and my Facebook political designation :)

Here would be my suggestion for declaring a "winner" to version 2. Lets use our blowout game to do this. Winner take all. All troops are called from all over middle earth to a great battle at a central location.... Helm's Deep, Minas Tirith, Isengard, Black Gate.... where ever we decide. We can use in the fight ALL of our troops, wherever they are on the board, and the winner takes all. Four way fight... all alliances are off. Only one can win the battle. How does that sound?

Hey Jon, Richter and I were short troops for our bridge battle. Do you think we can round up enough troops to comprise our ENTIRE army? :)

I think that blowout game will be a blast, but I also think, in campaign terms, economy and positioning play a strategic role that this tactical battle cannot portray. I still vote for a vote. Unless someone else has a way to integrate the two.
