The tactical (in-game) retreat rules we approved quite awhile back after the Black Gate game have just been added to the Rules webpage to the Retreats section. Here's a list of the rules:
1. Players must transverse 2/3 of the field before retreating, but then may retreat off any edge, at least 2/3 down the field. Heroes may personally retreat off side edges anywhere past the 50 yard line.
2. #1 applies, but only (a) for battle of greater than 500 points per side, or (b) when topography or fortification limit access to the far retreat edge.
3. If impassible terrain features and enemy fortifications restrict passage to the end of the board by over twelve inches, a player may retreat off either side edge twenty-four inches on his side of the blockage. If EITHER of these zones would overlap that player's starting edge or are similarly blocked, then the starting edge is his retreat zone instead. There is no point condition on this rule.
